THE LEAD:
The Salem State Vikings faced Plymouth State in a Little East Conference matchup, but a dominant first half by the Panthers proved to be the difference in a 20–8 result. Plymouth State set the tone early with a five-goal first quarter and extended its lead with a six-goal run in the second, building an 11–1 advantage at halftime. Salem State showed better execution in the second half, finding more rhythm offensively and closing the game with a late scoring push, but the early deficit was too much to overcome as the Panthers maintained control to secure the conference win.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

The Salem State Vikings fell to the Panthers of Plymouth State, 20-8 in a fast-paced LEC conference matchup as the Panthers used an early surge and offensive opportunities. 

Plymouth State opened the game with a strong first quarter, scoring five goals while holding Salem State scoreless to take a 5–0 lead.

The Vikings got on the board early in the second quarter to make it 5–1, but the Panthers responded with six straight goals to close the half. Plymouth State led 11–1 at halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams scored three goals. Salem State found more offensive opportunities, but Plymouth State maintained control, extending the lead to 14–4 heading into the fourth.

The Panthers added five consecutive goals to start the final quarter, pushing the score to 19–4. Salem State answered with a goal to make it 19–5 before Plymouth State added another. The Vikings closed the game with three straight goals, but would ultimately fall to the Panthers 20-8. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Connor Vittands would lead the Vikings in offense against the Panthers scoring three goals. 
  • Payton Cabral would lead the Vikings in groundballs with 4 in the matchup against Plymouth State 
  • Jaxon Thomas would have two caused turnovers for the Vikings against the Panthers. 
  • Ryan Cohen would have 17 saves on 37 shots against Plymouth State.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday April 21st, 2026 where they look to return home on Alumni Field in Salem, MA to take on the Huskies of Southern Maine for an LEC conference matchup. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00pm, this mark senior day for the Vikings.
