THE LEAD: The Salem State men's lacrosse team tied a program record Saturday by scoring 27 goals, resulting in a 27-5 triumph at Anna Maria College. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, it was all Salem State. Within the first five minutes, Salem found the back of the net five times from five different goal scorers, which included Cameron Collins (Peabody, Mass.)Grady Smith (Beverly, Mass.)Payton Cabral (Lancaster, Mass.)Joseph Turpin (Groveland, Mass.)Landon Rice (Sturbridge, Mass.), and Connor Vittands (Gloucester, Mass.).
  • While the AMCATS had opportunities with less than five minutes left in the quarter after putting two shots on net, Vikings goalie Ryan Cohen (Bedford, Mass.) turned away both attempts, and the Vikes took a 9-0 lead going into the second.
  • Despite a quick goal from Anna Maria at 12:02 in the first, Salem's offense responded by scoring seven-straight goals. Rice highlighted the offense in the second with four goals for the squad, which allowed Salem to take a 16-1 advantage into the half. 
  • Coming out of the break, the Blue and Orange continued right where they left off, tacking on another seven goals and pushing their lead to 23-1 after three frames. In the third, Ryan Jones (Saugus, Mass.) led the scoring with three goals.
  • While Anna Maria added four more goals in the fourth, Salem never let the hosts gain any momentum as the visitors added on four more goals and earned a 27-5 victory.

 

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Three different Vikings finished the day with five or more goals, led by a career-high seven from Rice. Salem's two other five-goal scorers were Jones and Smith. 
  • Jimmy Trahan (Reading, Mass.) and Juan Vidal (Grafton, Mass.) both scored their first career goals on Saturday. 
  • Cohen earned the win in 45:00 of action and ended the day with seven saves. Brayden Duggento (Vergennes, Vt.) also made his first collegiate appearance between the pipes. In his 15:00 of playing time, he stopped four shots on the day. 
  • James Tatro (Byfield, Mass.) guided the offense with a career-high six assists.
  • Kyle Pickering and Miles Cormier led the AMCATS with two goals apiece.
  • In net, Tyler Davidson took the loss for Anna Maria after finishing the day with 14 saves in 30:00 of action. Nick Lopez ended coming in for the second half for the hosts and made eight stops in 30:00 of playing time.
  • Salem's 27 goals are tied for the most in a single game in program history when the squad topped Eastern Nazarene on March 30, 2022, by a score of 27-2. 
  • Rice's seven goals are tied for the third most in a single game in program history. 
  • Tatro's six-assist performance has him tied for the second most in a single game in program history. 
  • As a team, Salem outshot Anna Maria by a 79-23 margin. The Vikings' 79 shots are the second most in a game in program history. 
  • The last time Salem scored at least 20 goals was last season in a 24-4 win over MCLA on March 12, 2025.
