Southern Maine Pushes Past Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Southern Maine posted a 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-15, 25-12) victory over Salem State in non-conference volleyball action at Hill Gym on Wednesday evening. The Huskies go to 6-22 while the Vikings slip to 2-23.

How it Happened: 

  • Salem State battled Southern Maine, before losing set one 25-21. Leading, 6-5, the Huskies scored seven straight points, thanks to multiple attack errors by Salem State. However, the Vikings fought back with five straight kills, including two by Presley Shairs to pull to within three, 14-11. Aces by Mackenzie Hubert and Shairs gave Salem State a two-point advantage, 20-18, but Southern Maine rallied, finishing the set with three straight kills.
  • The Vikings hit .333% in set two to record their only win, recording 11 kills with only one error. Conversely, the Huskies poor hitting - nine errors - helped give Salem State a 12-5 lead after a kill by Shairs. A kill by Gracie Dailey grew the lead to 21-10, before Salem State pulled away for a 25-12 victory.
  • Drew Johnson put Southern Maine on top in set three, 8-3 with her second kill of the set. The lead grew to double digits following another finish by Johnson before the Vikings cut the deficit to six points. Three aces by Madison Zimmer helped propel the Huskies to five straight points to close the match.
  • Dailey gave Salem State an early 5-1 lead in set four, but Southern Maine came back to tie the set at 6-all. A 10-3 run put the Huskies comfortably in front, before the fourth ace by the Huskies gave them a 20-10 advantage. A 4-0 run ended the set, giving Southern Maine a four-set victory.
