MASCAC QUARTERFINALS: No.4 Salem State Takes on No.5 Anna Maria

TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE

SALEM, Mass. - The No. 4-seeded Salem State men's soccer team (8-3-6, 3-1-4 MASCAC) hosts No. 5-seeded Anna Maria College (4-10-2, 3-3-2 MASCAC) in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Five Things to Know

  • Salem enters the tournament as the fourth seed and has now reached the postseason eight straight seasons.
  • The Vikings will be looking to add their fifth MASCAC Tournament championship in program history.
  • Salem finished the regular season 8-3-6, which is the most regular-season wins since 2023, when the squad was 12-4-4.
  • The Blue and Orange are currently riding a three-game unbeaten streak versus the AMCATS.
  • The last time the men's soccer team hosted a home playoff game was in 2023, when Salem topped Fitchburg State, 2-0, in the MASCAC Quarterfinals.

Who to Watch For

  • Salem State's offense will be led by Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) , who finished with a team-high 15 goals. His 15 tallies are tied for the ninth-most goals scored in program history. During the regular season, the graduate forward recorded two hat tricks (Oct. 11 vs. Bridgewater State and Oct. 25 vs. MCLA). The 15 scores put De Sousa-Vieira at second in the conference and tied for 13th in all Division III. Throughout the year, he earned two MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week awards for Salem. Earlier this year, when Salem and Anna Maria played to a 4-4 draw, De Sousa-Vieira scored the Vikes' opening goal.
  • The Vikings offense also features two other scorers who finished with at least five goals on the year in Jadiel Bomfim (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.). For Fevry, his five goals mark a new career-high, topping his previous best of four. Earlier this season, Fevry recorded a two-goal game, which came in a 3-2 win over Gordon (Sept. 24). Bomfirm also had a strong showing against Anna Maria earlier this season, where he scored the Vikes' fourth goal that game.
  • In net this year, Salem saw Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.) and Brady Whitmarsh (Attleboro, Mass.) split time playing 900:00 and 630:00, respectively. Silva set numerous career-highs in minutes, saves (40), and wins (four) while also posting a solid 1.50 goals against average. Against Anna Maria earlier this season, Silva ended the day with three stops, which was good for a 4-4 tie. Meanwhile, Whitmarsh also set multiple career-highs in games played and starts (seven), minutes, wins (four), and shutouts (three). His strongest outings came against Gordon (Sept. 24) and Bridgewater State (Oct. 11) when he tied his career-high in saves with nine. The duo of Silva and Whitmarsh is the only two goalies in the MASCAC to rank within the top five in goals against average, with Whitmarsh in third and Silva in fifth.
  • Anna Maria's offense will feature leading goal scorer Kyle Brocker, who ended the regular season with nine goals. This year for the AMCATS, Brocker recorded two multi-goal games in wins versus Mass. Maritime (Sept. 27) and MCLA (Oct. 4), where he found the back of the net two times in each contest. In games Brocker scored for the AMCATS, the team was 3-3-1.
  • The AMCATS featured a duo of Romain Baert and Federico Foganio, who split time in net this season. Baert led the team with 798:22 in net and finished with a 2.37 goals against average to go along with 45 saves. In the 4-4 tie against the Vikings this year, he stopped a total of six shots. Meanwhile, Foganio totaled 641:38 between the pipes and notched 40 saves and a save percentage of .741 while stopping 40 shots. Despite not playing Salem this year, he stopped a season-high 11 saves last month against No. 7 Wheaton in a 4-0 loss.
