Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw at Fitchburg

THE LEAD— Despite being down the majority of the match, a late Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) goal in the 71st minute helped the Salem State men's soccer team tie 1-1 at Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Throughout the first half, neither side let the other gain any momentum. However, at 22:47, Fitchburg grabbed the 1-0 advantage after Anthony Oliveira-Dalicandro found the back of the net thanks to a Nathan Youngquest assist.
  • For the remainder of the half, Salem had numerous chances to even the contest by peppering Falcons goalie, Tristan White, with two shots, but were turned away each time as the hosts took a 1-0 lead into the half. 
  • As the second got underway, Salem continued to put shots on net, testing White, who stopped four shots before the Vikes were able to even the contest at 71:29. After David Carfagnini (Stoneham, Mass.) sent a long cross into the box that De Sousa-Vieira headed past White, and evened the contest was evened at one.
  • Salem had a great look to take the lead at 77:39 when Jadiel Bomfim (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) put his shot on net, but White ended up making the stop. From then on, both sides kept the other in check, and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • De Sousa-Vieira's score is his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
  • Carfagnini's helper is his first of the 2025 season.
  • Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.) finished the afternoon with five saves.
  • White ended the day with 11 stops for Fitchburg.
  • Salem held the shot advantage by a 22-12 margin. It is their sixth game with 20-plus shots in a game. In those contests, the Vikings are 3-1-2. 
  • The Blue and Orange led the Falcons in corner kicks, 5-2.
  • Salem extended its unbeaten streak against Fitchburg to 10 games (9-0-1).
