THE LEAD—  The Salem State University Men's Soccer team kicked off MASCAC play at Mass. Maritime, where the squad fell 3-0 at Clean Harbors Stadium Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mass. Maritime wasted no time as the hosts netted the first goal under 10 minutes into the first half at 9:55 when Brody Calvert found the back of the net. Salem had a chance to even the score at the 12-minute mark when the squad drew a corner kick and with the ball staying on the Buccaneers' side of the field, Michael Echavarria (Boston, Mass.) had a chance for the tying goal but saw his shot blocked by a Mass. Maritime defender.
  • Later in the frame, the Bucaneers struck again at the 15:25 mark off the boot of Brody Calvert and extended the hosts' lead to 2-0. From then on, Mass. Maritime's defense kept Salem at bay by allowing just two shots and would take a 2-0 lead into the half.
  • As the second half got underway, the Vikings had an early chance to knock the deficit to one when Matheus Pelissari (Lowell, Mass.) sent a shot on net only to be turned away by Mass. Maritime goalie, Preston Joia.
  • The second would be a defensive battle as neither side let the other have many great opportunities, but at the 79:02 mark, the Buccaneers added another insurance goal courtesy of Calum Williams that made it 3-0, which ultimately would be the final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.) finished the day with two saves. Meanwhile, Joia ended the afternoon with four stops for the hosts.
  • Calvert led Mass. Maritime offense on the day with a brace.
  • Salem State held a slight shot advantage by a 10-9 margin.
  • The Vikings ended the day with six corner kicks compared to Mass. Maritime's four.
