THE LEAD –  For the second game in a row, the Salem State men's lacrosse team scored 16 goals and ended up topping Husson University, 16-12, on Wednesday evening.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salem State's offense started off fast, scoring two goals less than a minute into the contest, thanks to Payton Cabral (Lancaster, Mass.) and Jaxon Thomas (Beverly, Mass.). After tacking on another goal from Cameron Collins (Peabody, Mass.) at 13:36, Husson responded with three-straight scores and evened the contest at three with seven minutes left in the quarter.
  • Despite the three quick Husson scores, the Vikings answered back with goals of their own courtesy of James Tatro (Byfield, Mass.) and Ryan Jones (Saugus, Mass.) and pushed their lead to two (5-3). However, the Eagles added one more goal before the end of the quarter and would go down 5-4 heading into the second.
  • The second quarter had plenty of back-and-forth play with six ties and lead changes throughout the frame. With less than five minutes left in the half (03:36) after Husson tied the game at eight, the Vikes closed out the second with two-straight scores to go into the half up 10-8.
  • In the third, it was all Salem as the Blue and Orange outscored Husson, 4-1, and ended the third up 14-9. Connor Vittands (Gloucester, Mass.) highlighted the high-scoring quarter with two scores. The Eagles opened the fourth with two scores and pulled within three (14-11) with less than 10 minutes left (09:41). However, Salem would not let Husson get any closer as the squad saw two scores from Tatro and Landon Rice (Sturbridge, Mass.) for the eventual 16-12 win.
