Salem State Blanks Rivier 2-0

SALEM, Mass. --  Salem State used two first period goals and Will Nepveu recorded his second shutout of the season as Salem State defeated Rivier, 2-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena. The Vikings are now 12-6 on the season and 8-4 in the MASCAC while the Raiders go to 5-13-1 and 1-10-1.     

How it Happened:

  • Nick Sweet took the opening faceoff and his backhander off a breakaway gave Salem State a 1-0 lead just :14 seconds into the contest. 
  • Ryan Barrett intercepted a pass near mid-ice and buried a shot past goalie LJ Newell to make the score 2-0 in favor of Salem State at 16:47 of the first.
  • Salem State's defense limited Rivier the rest of the way as the Raiders managed just 15 shots over the final two periods.    

Inside the Numbers: 

  • Will Nepveu (11-5) stopped all 26 shots in the win.
  • LJ Newell (L, 6-9-1) made 32 saves in the loss.  
  • Neither team connected on the power play, going 0-for-8.
  • Salem State held a 34-26 advantage in shots on goal.
