Suffolk Nips Salem State in Overtime

SALEM, Mass. -- Gavin Havens scored 1:07 into overtime as Suffolk opened their season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Salem State at Rockett Arena on Saturday evening. The Rams are 1-0 while the Vikings begin 0-2.

How it Happened:

  • A Salem State turnover in their own zone led to a Suffolk goal as Ryan Webb put home a rebound at the 6:00 minute mark for the only scoring of the first period.
  • Keagan O'Donoghue set up Landyn Greatorex for the equalizer at 14:30 of the second as Salem State converted on the power play to draw even.
  • Greatorex found O'Donoghue alone on the left wing after a pileup in front of the net left some space for O'Donoghue to score the go-ahead goal 4:27 into the third.
  • However, Suffolk's Cole Scott put home a rebound after a shot by Shane Adler at 6:48 of the third period, tying the game 2-2.
  • The Rams then won the game in overtime as Havens broke towards the net and had the puck deflect off his skate past goalie Aaron Mercer for the game-winner.
  • CJ Hapward made 38 saves in the victory.
  • Mercer made 41 saves in goal for Salem State.
  • Havens finished with a goal and assist for Suffolk.
  • O'Donoghue and Greatorex each tallied a score and assist for Salem State.
  • The Rams held a 44-40 advantage in shots.
