THE LEAD— The Salem State field hockey team dropped a tough 1-0 contest to Fitchburg State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Throughout the first quarter, neither side would let the other gain any momentum. However, with 26 seconds left in the frame, Sophia Yates rifled in a shot from the right side of the net.
- During the second quarter, Salem had multiple chances to even the contest. At 26:19 and 26:37, Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.) and Zoey Radford (Biddeford, Maine) fired back-to-back shots on Falcons goalie Isabella Corcoran but were turned away each time.
- In the third quarter, the Falcons peppered Vikes goalie Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) with two shots on net, but stonewalled the visitors each time and kept the deficit at one.
- The Blue and Orange had numerous looks for the equalizer in the fourth, highlighted by shots from Cochran and Allison Thomas (Carver, Mass.) at 59:45 and 59:59, respectively, but were stopped by Corcoran.
