THE LEAD—  In a dominant team effort, the Salem State women's volleyball team swept Lesley University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-3, 25-17) Tuesday evening at Minuteman HS.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salem's offense got off to a quick start, racing out to an early 8-3 lead. Sabina Kamanda (Dracut, Mass.) and Kayla Sullivan (Millis, Mass.) highlighted the early offense with two kills apiece. As the set progressed, Lesley trimmed its deficit to three (13-10), but the Vikings' offense gave itself breathing room with a 6-0 run, which made it a 19-10 Salem lead. Kamanda highlighted the offense with two service aces. For the remainder of the first set, Salem closed out the frame, outscoring the Lynx, 6-4, and won the opening set, 25-14.
  • After Lesley went up 2-1 early in the second, the Vikings' offense surged ahead with a 22-0 run. Even with Lesley breaking up the Salem scoring surge, the Vikes ended up with a 25-3 set two win. During the Blue and Orange's offensive explosion, Presley Shairs (Salem, Mass.) paced the attack with seven kills.
  • In the third set, Salem continued its momentum and grabbed a quick 8-3 lead before the Lynx called a timeout. Coming out of the break, Lesley hung around as the hosts found themselves down six (14-8) midway through the third. However, Salem did not let Lesley get any closer by pushing its lead out to 10 (22-12) with an 8-4 stretch. Even with a late rally from the Lynx that made it 24-17, Salem completed the sweep from a Bella Coccia (Westfield, Mass.) secured a 3-0 sweep with a 25-17 set three win.
