THE LEAD—  The Salem State women's volleyball team fell in non-conference action versus the Suffolk Rams Thursday evening by a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 25-17).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening moments of the first set, both sides went back and forth. After Salem tied things at seven from a Presley Shairs (Salem, Mass.) ace, the Rams were able to pull ahead and double up the Vikings (16-8) behind a 9-1 run highlighted by two Jordyn Mik kills.
  • Later in the set, after Suffolk made it 23-12, Salme would not go quietly as the Blue and Orange cut the deficit to five (24-19) thanks to a 7-1 rally before Suffolk would call a timeout. Coming out of the break, though, the Rams secured the opening set victory thanks to a Mik kill.
  • Suffolk's offense came out fast in set two as the visitors jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage. However, Salem pulled within three (10-7) with a 5-2 push that featured kills from Ariana Barrows (Danvers, Mass.) and Shairs.
  • The Rams though, continued to keep the Vikings at a distance, and when Salem pulled within three once again (13-10), Suffolk would not let Salem get any closer as the Rams closed out set two on a 12-6 run that made it 25-16. Chloe Clement highlighted the Rams' offense in the closing stretch with two kills and a service ace as well. Mik also chipped in with three kills of her own, too.
  • With the match tied at nine in the third set, Salem's offense hit its stride as the hosts pulled ahead of Suffolk and grabbed its largest lead (18-12) courtesy of a 9-3 spurt. Shairs helped with the Vikings offense thanks to her two kills and service aces. As the third set went on, the Rams found themselves down three (22-19) but would not be able to pull off the comeback as the Vikings closed out the third with three-straight points and earned a 25-19 set win.
  • Salem jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead thanks to two kills from Sabina Kamanda (Dracut, Mass.) and a few Rams errors, too. However, Suffolk would chip away before eventually being down one (10-9) thanks to a 7-2 run. The Vikings tried to hold off the Rams, but after Suffolk came back to tie the fourth set at 15, the Rams finished the match on a 10-2 stretch for the 25-17 win.
