Vikings Fall in Three Sets to Chargers
NEW LONDON, N.H. – Salem State volleyball took a break from conference play this evening as they traveled to Colby-Sawyer College to face the Chargers. The Chargers defeated the Vikings in three sets, bringing Salem's record to 2-13 for the season.
How it Happened:
- The Vikings started the first set with a 2-0 lead, but four consecutive points from the Chargers put the home team ahead, 4-2. Midway through the set, the Vikings rallied with a 5-2 run to narrow the gap to just one point (15-14). However, the Chargers responded with five unanswered points which would carry them to the 25-18 set one victory.
- The Chargers quickly took a 4-0 lead before a kill from Presley Shairs (Salem, Mass.) stopped their momentum and sparked a Vikings rally, giving them a 7-6 advantage. The Vikings managed to lead by as much as two points at 14-12, but the Chargers finished the set strong, going on a 13-4 run to take the second set.
- A string of Charger errors enabled the Vikings to score six unanswered points, giving them an early 6-3 lead. They held a narrow advantage until back-to-back kills from Colby-Sawyer turned the tide, putting the Chargers ahead 10-9. From that point, the Chargers limited the Vikings to just six more points, ultimately winning the set 25-15 to secure their victory on the evening.
Inside the Numbers:
- Presley Shairs had a team-high eight kills tonight.
- Defensively, Kailey Roche (Billerica, Mass.) and Eva Haralabatos (Melrose, Mass.) led the Vikings with nine and eight digs, respectively, while Haralabtos added five assists in the effort.
- Celia Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) contributed 10 assists, seven digs, and an ace for the Vikings.
