Salem State Splits Opening Tri-Meet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Salem State began the 2024 season on the road with a tri-meet hosted by Albertus Magnus. The Vikings won their opening match with a 3-0 sweep over Curry College before losing 3-2 to Albertus Magnus in their second match. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (CURRY): 

  • Salem State never trailed in the first set, as the Vikings built a comfortable 22-14 lead. Celia Carbone opened the set with three straight service aces.

  • Salem State broke a 9-9 tie in the second set with a 9-3 run highlighted by a kill and a pair of aces from Allie Ulmschneider.  

  • The Vikings started slowly in set three before regaining control with a 7-2 run. Salem State scored the final six points, with Presley Shairs and Ariana Barrows providing a pair of kills. 

  • Curry hit just .106 for the match, including an .034 hitting percentage in the final set. 

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Ulmschneider and Presley Shairs led Salem State with five kills each.

  • Barrows and Kailey Roche topped the team with four digs apiece.

  • The Vikings finished with 15 service aces. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (ALBERTUS MAGNUS): 

  • Salem State and Albertus Magnus played a close first set with the largest lead being just five points (17-12). Four kills by Shairs and five assists by Carbone highlighted the first set win with a kill by Mahoney and an attack error providing the final two points in a 25-23 win. 

  • Once again the two teams played a tightly contested set. However, leading 10-8, a Shairs kill sparked a 7-3 run with three of the points coming on aces. Albertus Magnus roared back from an eight-point deficit late, forcing the two teams to extend the set. Tied at 26-26 an attack error and kill by Celia Carbone gave the Vikings a 28-26 victory.

  •  The Vikings lost sets three and four before losing the fifth and decisive set 15-7 as the Falcons rallied back from a 2-0 deficit. 

  •  INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Carbone had 15 assists and 12 digs.

  • Roche produced 15 digs and eight assists.

  • Coccia topped the Vikings with seven kills.

  • Salem State struggled offensively hitting 0.00% in the final set.
