THE LEAD— The Salem State women's soccer team wrapped up a two-game road trip in a non-conference matchup at UMaine Farmington, where the squad fell 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first half, both sides played each other hard defensively. Salem had an early look in the first at 18:47 when Samarah Paiva (Revere, Mass.) sent a shot on net but was turned away by Beavers goalie Paige Gonya. As the half went on, UMaine Farmington broke the scoreless tie with a goal from Kiley Meader after being set up by Miah Coffin at 22:04.
  • Nearly 14 minutes later at 36:55, UMaine Farmington took advantage of a penalty inside the box, and Kyri Meak put home a penalty kick that gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage.  With less than five minutes in the half, the Vikes saw shots from both McKenna Gilligan (Salem, Mass.) and Madison Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) at 40:42 and 41:42, respectively, but Salem was once again denied by Gonya.
  • As the second half got underway, the Blue and Orange grabbed a goal back after Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) took advantage of a penalty kick at 69:44. Once the senior forward lined up her shot, she beat Gonya on the right side after she made a dive for the save but deflected the ball into the net.
  • Later in the second, Salem had an excellent opportunity to tie the match when Makayla Campagnone (Methuen, Mass.) put a shot on net, but Gonya made the stop and preserved the hosts' 2-1 advantage. Campagnone had one more look at 85:10, but her shot was knocked down by the Beavers' defense, and the hosts ultimately held on for the 2-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Mitza's score is her team-leading fourth score on the year. Her four goals also mark a new career-high for the senior.
  • Madison DeWitt (Canaan, Conn.) got the start in net and finished with two saves. Wednesday's start was also the first of her collegiate career.
  • Gonya ended the day with seven stops for UMaine Farmington.
  • Salem held the shot advantage on the day by a 16-10 margin.
  • The Beavers held the slight advantage in corner kicks, 6-5.
  • Wednesday's match marked the second meeting between the two programs. Both sides have now each won a game against each other.
