THE LEAD— The Salem State women's soccer team traveled to Bridgewater for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup, but the squad fell 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Mazzaferro Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first half, both sides played each other hard defensively, not allowing the other to gain momentum. However, Salem did have a nice look early in the frame (14:54) when Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) put a shot on net that was unfortunately stopped by Bears goalie Logan Levesque.
  • Despite Bridgewater having more shots than Salem in the first half (5-3), the Vikings' defense forced all the Bears' shots to be off target. The Blue and Orange had one more look before the half ended at 43:27 when Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.) put a shot on net that ended up being stopped by Levesque.
  • As the second half got underway (45:35) with both sides still scoreless, Bridgewater took advantage of a Salem own goal after the ball caught an unlucky deflection off a Salem defender and snuck into the net.
  • Later in the half (64:15), Chelsea Martinez (Salem, Mass.) nearly evened the contest at one when she rifled a shot on net, but Levesque once again made another stop for Bridgewater. With around 11 minutes left in the contest (78:52), the Bears tacked on an insurance goal courtesy of Abigail Shea. Despite the squad peppering Levesque with four shots the rest of the way, Bridgewater ended up with the 2-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) finished the day with four saves.
  • Makayla Campagnone (Methuen, Mass.) and Mitza led the Salem offense with two shots apiece.
  • Logan Levesque stopped eight shots for the hosts.
  • Despite being outshot 14-9, Salem ended the day with more shots on goal by an 8-6 margin.
  • The Bears ended the day with the advantage in corners, 7-4. However, both sides had two corner kicks in the second half.
