THE LEAD— The Salem State University women's soccer team fell in a hard-fought 1-0 loss Wednesday evening to Plymouth State at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first (6:15), the Panthers struck first when Islah Godo dropped a ball on a free kick in the middle of the box that found Piper Sullivan. From there, she was able to head the ball past Vikings goalie, Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) for the 1-0 advantage.
  • After the Panthers' goal, Salem had numerous opportunities to get on the board. Samarah Paiva (Revere, Mass.) gave the Vikes a good look at 29:51, but was turned away by Plymouth goalie Sydney Rowe. For the remainder of the frame, both sides continued to play one another hard, and the visitors took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • As the second half got underway, Salem continued to apply the offensive pressure. Early in the frame, Salem had two quick chances with Lindsay McGotty (Morristown, N.J.) at 59:25 and Chelsea Martinez (Salem, Mass.) at 61:57, putting shots on Rowe, but were stopped each time.
  • Even after those two quick shots, the Blue and Orange continued to try to find the equalizer by outshooting Plymouth, 5-3, but could not find the back of the net and ultimately fell, 1-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Guyer finished the night with a season-high 10 saves for Salem.
  • Paiva and McKenna Gilligan (Salem, Mass.) led the Vikings offense with three shots apiece.
