THE LEAD— The Salem State women's soccer team fell in a non-conference road matchup at Gordon, 4-0, Tuesday evening at Brigham Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Throughout the first half, both sides played each other tough. Despite Gordon rattling off two shots, the Vikings' defense and Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) held firm and kept it a 0-0 game. However, at the 32:04 mark, the hosts finally broke the scoreless tie courtesy of a Tia Fyden score. Later in the first, the Fighting Scots tacked on another insurance goal off the boot of Eowyn Lapp, which allowed the hosts to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
  • As the second half got underway, Salem had a chance to cut into the deficit when Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) ripped a shot on net but was turned away by Fighting Scot's goalie, Emily Bengtson.
  • Later in the frame at 57:04, Lapp netted her second goal of the night, which pushed the Gordon lead to three (3-0). Nearly 10 minutes later (66:29), Lapp completed the hat trick with her third goal after she corralled a loose ball in front of the net. From then on, the Gordon defense kept Salem in check and eventually secured the 4-0 win.
