THE LEAD— Even though the Salem State women's soccer team held a 17-3 shot advantage, the squad ended up tying with Thomas College, 0-0, on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem State's offense came out firing early in the first as the squad peppered Thomas's goalie, Emily Rock, with three shots within the first 10 minutes. Two of those three came relatively quickly after the other as Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had her initial shot on net stopped at 9:15, then 31 seconds later (9:46) she was able to get another off but was turned away once again by Rock.
- Later in the frame (20:00), the Terriers would have their first shot on net, but Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) came up with the save to preserve the 0-0 tie. Both sides continued to battle defensively, and towards the end of the half, both Thomas and Salem State would each get a shot on net, but both teams' respective goalies made big-time saves, keeping the score 0-0 going into the half.
- Olivia Henke (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tested Thomas quickly in the second (46:22) when she put a shot on net, but unfortunately was turned away by Rock again. The Terriers had their best look at the 51:14 mark when Alexandra Wallingford sent a shot to the left corner but thanks to the outstretched arm of Guyer, she made the stop and kept the contest scoreless.
- Salem continued to put shots on net for the rest of the contest and had a great look towards the end at 87:17 when Mitza sent a shot on net trying to beat Rock's left side but she would be turned away again as both sides finished with a 0-0 draw.
