THE BASICS:
The Salem State Vikings earned a 4–2 conference win over the Anna Maria AMCATS after a scoreless first period. Salem State struck twice in the second period before Anna Maria responded with two quick goals to tie the game.
The Vikings broke the tie in the third period and added an empty-net goal late to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Salem State women's hockey team earned a hard-fought 4–2 conference victory over the Anna Maria AMCATS on Saturday, showcasing resilience and timely scoring to secure the win.
The opening period featured fast-paced, back-and-forth action, with both teams generating quality chances, but neither side was able to find the back of the net as strong defensive play and goaltending kept the game scoreless after one.
Salem State opened the scoring in the second period when Halle Greenleaf netted the Vikings' first goal of the game, scoring unassisted to give Salem State a 1–0 lead. The Vikings extended their advantage on the power play, as Ginger Osgood capitalized with helpers from Daelyn Williams and Mallory Albanese, making it 2–0.
Anna Maria answered back quickly, scoring twice in less than a minute to even the game at 2–2 heading into the third period.
In the final frame, Salem State broke the tie when Talia Martucci found the back of the net off assists from Aislinn Bennett, giving the Vikings a 3–2 lead. The AMCats pushed late and pulled their goalie in an attempt to force overtime, but Isabelle Besser sealed the win with an unassisted empty-net goal, securing the 4–2 victory for the Vikings.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Amy Thul had 23 saves on 25 shots against the AMCATS of Anna Maria College.
- Halle Greenleaf, Ginger Osgood, Talia Martucci and Isabelle Besser would lead the offense for the Vikings scoring the four goals tonight against the AMCATS.
- It would be Daelyn Williams, Mallory Albanese, and Aislinn Bennett to all tally assists against the AMCATS.
