THE LEAD—  Despite a second period goal from Isabelle Besser (Scituate, R.I.), the Salem State women's ice hockey team fell in overtime to Rivier University, 2-1 Tuesday evening at Conway Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first period, neither side could find the back of the net thanks to strong defense and goaltending. Rivier had multiple good looks when the Raiders fired three straight shots with less than two minutes left in the frame (18:35), but Delaney Cox (Spencer, Mass.) stonewalled each attempt.
  • Throughout the second, more of the same play continued as neither side let the other gain any momentum. However, at 17:02, Besser broke the scoreless tie after firing off a shot that beat Raiders goalie Emily Krauss.
  • However, nearly halfway into the third (10:23), Rivier evened the contest at one when Chloe Bryda put a shot past Cox after a nice set up by Rebecca McKelvey. Salem had a fair amount of looks for the go-ahead goal in the third including a point where Aislinn Benett (Milford, Mass.) ripped a shot on net that was blocked by a Raiders defender the squads headed into overtime.
  • In the extra period, River wasted no time as the hosts potted the game-winner off the stick of McKelvey at 2:34 after taking advantage of a powerplay opportunity.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Besser's score is her first on the 2025 season and fifth of her career.
  • Cox ended the day with 32 saves. It is her second time this season she finished with at least 30 saves.
  • For Rivier, Krauss finished with 25 stops.
  • The Raiders held the advantage in shots over the Vikings, 34-26. However, Salem outshot the hosts, 9-7 in the third.
  • Despite allowing the powerplay goal, Salem stopped Rivier on its four other powerplay chances Tuesday.
  • Tuesday's matchup was the eighth all-time between the two programs. Salem currently holds the series lead, 5-3-0.
