THE LEAD—  In a game that saw a combined 10 goals, the Salem State women's ice hockey team fell to Salve Regina, 6-4, Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nearly halfway through the first period, Salem struck first courtesy of a goal from Amanda Beatty (Broomall, Pa.) at 11:09. Lauren Bosworth (Ashland, Mass.) had an initial shot on net, but after it was turned away, Beatty was in the right place at the right time and put her shot in the back of the net.
  • Later in the frame, Salve's offense responded and evened the contest at one thanks to a score from Morgan Peritz, and the squads headed into the second period tied at one.
  • Less than 10 minutes into the second (5:19), the Seahawks grabbed their first lead of the day when Riley Esposito made it 2-1 thanks to a nice pass from Paige Nottingham. Despite the quick go-ahead goal, the Vikings responded nearly three minutes later (08:14) with an Aislinn Bennett (Milford, Mass.) score off a great look by Mallory Albanese (Nutley, N.J.).
  • Salve's offense, though, picked up the tempo for the remainder of the second period and tacked on three unanswered goals. At the end of the second period, the hosts took a 5-2 lead going into the final frame.
  • Even with the large deficit, the Vikes continued to hang around, and less than five minutes into the third (03:55), the squad took advantage of a power-play opportunity, and Albanese put home her shot, making it a 5-3 game. Around seven minutes later (10:04), Bosworth pulled Salem within one (5-4) after she put home a pass from Beatty.
  • The Seahawks were finally able to break up the Vikings' momentum when the hosts stretched the lead back to two (6-4) just 34 seconds later (10:38) off the stick of Arielle Sushinski. For the remainder of the third, Salem had numerous opportunities as the squad fired seven shots, but unfortunately could not find the back of the net, and Salve held on for the 6-4 win.
