THE LEAD— The Salem State women's ice hockey team kicked off the 2025-26 season with a 2-0 loss at Plymouth State on Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first period, both sides held the other scoreless thanks to solid defense and strong goaltending. Salem had a great opportunity early in the first when Aislinn Bennett (Milford, Mass.) fired back-to-back shots at 4:28 and 4:36 but both were blocked by Panthers defenders each time.
- Plymouth also had multiple opportunities in the first period, including nearly midway through the opening period, when Claire Deis and Olivia Robbins sent two quick shots on net at 10:29 and 10:33, but Vikings goalie Amy Thul (Eau Claire, Wisc.) turned away both shots.
- Early in the second, Salem had another great chance to get on the board when three Vikings fired three quick shots on net, but unfortunately, they could not find the back of the net, whether a Panther knocked it down or goalie Teagan Wilson stopped the puck.
- However, at 17:43, Plymouth struck first when Sofia Cuozzo found the back of the net after Jamie Steinmetz helped on the play. From then on, Plymouth held firm and took the one-goal lead into the final frame.
- Plymouth continued its momentum early in the third when Laura Castronova gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage at 4:48. The Blue and Orange did have a chance to get on the board towards the end of the game when Lauren Bosworth (Ashland, Mass.) fired two-straight shots on net, but Wilson stonewalled both attempts and the hosts held on for the 2-0 win.
