Spartans Hand Vikings 4-2 Loss

RUTLAND, Vt. – Salem States' Brooke Dineen scored a pair of goals, but it was not enough as Vermont State Castleton skated past Salem State 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action. The win pushes the Spartans record to 9-11-1 and 5-8-1 in conference while the Vikings go to 6-15 and 2-12 in the NEHC.

How it Happened:

  • Meg Aiken's power play goal gave Vermont State Castleton a 1-0 lead at 12:31 of the first. 
  • Dineen answered for Salem State later in the period as the two teams entered the second period tied at 1-1.
  • Moa Carlsson regained the lead for the Spartans with a shorthanded goal at 8:57 of the second.
  • Carlsson added her second score of the game with less than six and a half minutes left, increasing Vermont State Castleton's lead to 3-1.
  • A power play goal by Dineen drew the Vikings to within 3-2 later in the second as the Spartans carried a 3-2 advantage into the third.
  • Salem State could not find the equalizer in the third as Alex Johnson made it a two-goal game at 14:18, making the final 4-2.  

Inside the Numbers:

  • Victoria Bakopanos (7-9-1) stopped 18 shots in the win.
  • Cox (3-11) made 50 saves in the loss for the Vikings. 
  • Salem State went 1-for-6 (.167) on the power play.
