Beacons Hold Off Vikings

SALEM, Mass. -- Gianna Skrelja's second period power play goal was the difference as UMass Boston defeated Salem State, 1-0 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena. The Beacons take both games in the two-game set after winning, 5-1 the night before. UMass Boston goes to 4-2 and 4-0 in the NEHC this season. The Vikings are now 1-4 and 0-4 in conference.

How it Happened:

  • Brooke Dineen had Salem State's best scoring opportunity midway through the second as she deked her defender to create an open look, but her shot sailed just high.
  • Despite being outshot 26-10 over the first two periods, the Vikings held their own to keep the deficit to a goal.
  • Salem State played a spirited third period as Delaney Cox stopped all 11 shots she faced in the third, including a three-on-one that would have sealed the game for the Beacons.
  • The Vikings then pulled their goalie, but could not manufacture any scoring opportunities over the final two minutes.
