Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Owls In Conference Matchup

THE LEAD — Despite a dominant third-quarter surge that helped the Salem State Vikings overcome an early deficit and seize momentum, Salem State was unable to hold off a late rally from the Westfield State Owls, falling 56–54 in a tightly contested basketball conference matchup on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Salem State Vikings would take on the Owls of Westfield State for a hard-fought conference game. The Westfield State Owls managed to hold off a late push and secure a 56–54 victory in a thrilling back-and-forth game. 

Salem State came out aggressive, pouring in 15 points in the opening quarter of the game while matching Westfield's intensity on both ends of the floor. The Owls answered with 18 points in the first, setting the tone for a competitive night. The Vikings found their rhythm in the second quarter, adding 18 points behind strong guard play and transition offense, while Westfield kept pace with 16 to take a narrow edge into halftime.

The third quarter was strong for both teams, with Salem State posting 19 points in one of their most explosive stretches of the game. Westfield countered with 15, as both teams traded baskets and capitalized on defensive miscues. The Vikings' defensive pressure, highlighted by six steals from Ernidia Goncalves, helped swing momentum multiple times and kept the game back and forth. 

However, the fourth quarter tightened as the Owls would limit the Vikings to just four points in the final frame, while the Owls managed nine crucial points, including key possessions down the stretch to edge ahead. The Owls' ability to execute in late-game situations ultimately proved to be the difference. As the Owls would go on to seal the narrow two-point win against the Vikings 56-54. 

Both teams took advantage of transition opportunities, with Salem State recording 14 fast-break points and Westfield slightly ahead with 16. Inside the paint, the Vikings tallied 22 points, but the Owls answered with 26 points of their own, to capitalize in the paint late in regulation against the Vikings. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Kylie Schrock would lead the Vikings in points having a strong performance against the Owls scoring 16 points against the Owls. 

Ernidia Goncalves would finishing with 10 points to go along with her six steals, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Shakera Fullenwilder was equally dominant, scoring 9 points for the Vikings. 

Maria Orfanos contributed 11 points in a standout effort, while Amayah McConney added 10 points, giving Salem State a relentless scoring presence that fueled the back-and-forth battle throughout the night.

The Vikings look to take the road on Saturday February 21st and head to North Adams, MA to take on the Trailblazers of MCLA for a MASCAC conference matchup. This would mark the last regular season game for the Vikings. Tip-off is set to start at 12:00pm.
