Vikings Advance to Face Top Seed Westfield State
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Tara Perryman's RBI double in the sixth drove home Taylor McDermott with the eventual game-winning run as fifth seed Salem State earned a 7-6 victory over fourth seed Bridgewater State in the opening round of the MASCAC Postseason Softball Tournament on Wednesday. The Vikings (18-18) advance to face top seed Westfield State tomorrow at 3:30 pm. The Bears conclude their season 19-18.
Gracie Martineau (10-6) earned the win in relief of starter Alanis Toledano. Martineau did not allow a run in four innings or work, surrendering just a hit to go with four walks and three strikeouts. Toledano threw three innings, giving up six runs on eight hits with a walk and pair of strikeouts. Taylor McDermott was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBI. Dawn Eisnor 3-for-4 and Samantha Gaona-Sullivan, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, led Salem State's offense.
Olivia Hargreaves (7-6) suffered the loss as Bridgewater State used four pitchers in the game. Hargreaves allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Lily Gagnon started for the Bears, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Sidney Schwartz was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, run and two RBI. Victoria Becker finished 2-for-4 with a home run, run scored and RBI.
How It Happened
- Eisnor's single to center gave Salem State a 1-0 lead in the first.
- McDermott's two-run double in the second made the score 3-0 in favor of the Vikings.
- Schwartz cut the deficit to 3-1 with a solo shot in the third.
- A four-run third gave the Bears a 5-3 lead. Riley Fitzgerald plated the first run with a base hit to right. Gagnon added a two-run single before Schwartz followed with an RBI triple.

- A bases loaded walk to Alaina Giuliano and a fielder's choice by Allison Frost drew Salem State to within 6-5 in the fifth.
- McDermott tied the game in the sixth with a double that hit just inside the left field line before Perryman drove McDermott home with a double to left.
