BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Salem State and Mass Maritime split a doubleheader on Saturday at Rollins Field. The Vikings won game one, 6-1 before the Buccaneers bounced back to take game two, 8-6. Salem State's record now stands at 15-13 and 4-4 in the MASCAC while Mass Maritime is 15-13 and 2-6 in the conference.
How It Happened
Gracie Martineau pitched a complete game five-hitter allowing a run with six strikeouts. Taylor McDermott was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI while Emily Henning was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Jennamarie Klemp suffered the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts. Kelsey Booker was 2-for-3 for Mass Maritime.
- McDermott's single to left scored the first run for Salem State in the first.
- Ab'c'de Patane's groundout tied the game for Mass Maritime in the third.
- Isabella Perrotti's groundout gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
- Dawn Eisnor extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single to right in the sixth.
- Salem State scored three in the seventh on a base hit by Alaina Giuliano and McDermott's two-run single.
Game 2
How It Happened
Ashleigh Catlett earned the win in game two for Mass Maritime, giving up six runs on eight hits with six walks and nine strikeouts. Patane led the offense with two hits, including a double and home run with a walk and two RBI.
Sula Roberge allowed six runs - four earned - on seven hits with eight walks and a strikeout. Gianna Fowler was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI for Salem State.
- McDermott's and Fowlers's RBI singles put Salem State in front 2-0 in the first.
- Hannah Burton's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first cut the deficit to a run.
- Burton then tied the game with an RBI single in the third.
- A wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Reagan Kerecz gave the Buccaneers a 4-2 lead in the fourth.
- Burton's fielders choice made it 6-2 in favor of Mass Maritime in the sixth before Patane added a two-run home run to left for six-run Buccaneers' lead.
- Fowler blasted a grand slam in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6, but Catlett worked out of the jam stranding a runner on third.
