Salem State Earns Split At Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. -- Salem State took game one, 9-2 before Lasell came back to earn a split, 9-8 in the second game of a twinbill at Taylor Field on Thursday. The Vikings are now 15-12 while the Lasers go to 7-18.

Game 1

How It Happened

Sula Roberge threw 6.1 shutout innings and added a home run to earn a game one win, allowing just three hits and a walk in evening her record at 2-2. Roberge finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Taylor McDermott was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Salem State.

Abigail Fortin (4-7) took the loss in a complete game effort, giving up seven earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Rylee Herr was 1-for-2 for Lasell.

  • Samantha Gaona-Sullivan got the Salem State offense going with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Taylor McDermott added an infield single for a 2-0 Vikings' lead.
  • Salem State scored three in the second on an error and a McDermott single.
  • Roberge made it 6-2 in the fourth with a home run to left.
  • Abigail Richardson made it 9-2 in the seventh with a two-run double right. 

Game 2

How It Happened

Meghan Theall (3-6) earned the win in game two for the Lasers going 5.1 innings with five earned runs allowed on six his with a walk and two strikeouts. Theall was also 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and two RBI. Katie Hopkins was 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs and an RBI. 

Gracie Martineau (7-4) started for Salem State and went 1.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Gianna Fowler was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, three RBI and a run scored. Isabella Perrotti finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

  • Lasell opened the game with a five-run first, as a triple by Hopkins and five straight singles erased a 1-0 deficit.
  • Singles by Alyssa DeMarest and Theall and an error made it an 8-1 game in favor of Lasell in the second.
  • Allison Frost's double in the fifth cut the lead to 8-2.
  • A five-run sixth brought Salem State to within two runs with a Fowler two-run home run and Abigail Richardson's triple driving in three of the runs.
  • Fowler's RBI groundout made it 9-8 in the seventh, but Shyanne Raccio preserved the win despite giving up three runs on three hits in the final 1.2 innings.

Salem State takes on Mass Maritime this Saturday, April 19 @ 1:00 pm.
