Salem State Takes Two From Southern Maine

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State picked up pair of wins, defeating Southern Maine, 2-1 and 4-0 on Wednesday at Alumni Field. The Vikings win for the sixth time in seven games, and raise their record to 13-9. The Huskies are now 8-12.

How It Happened

Alanis Toledano improved to 4-3 with a complete game three-hitter in game one. Toledano allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Taylor McDermott finished 1-for-3 at the plate driving in the go-ahead run in the the sixth on a line single to right.

Lexus McIntosh (4-6) suffered the loss for Southern Maine, going six innings and giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Mackenzie Renner was 1-for-3 with a home run run, RBI and walk.

• Renner gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the third with a home run to left.
• Allison Frost tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. 
• A one out walk to Alaina Giuliano followed by a stolen base set up, McDermott, who delivered a two-out single to right, driving in Giuliano with the game-winning run.

Game 2

How It Happened

Gracie Martineau (7-2) threw a complete game shutout in game two, allowing only two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. McDermott was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Vikings. 

Mia Coots took the loss, giving up four unearned runs with nine strikeouts and three walks.   

• Salem State scored three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Samantha Gaona-Sullivan and an RBI single by McDermott. Tara Perryman follwed with a ground-rule double to center, giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead.  
• Salem State added another run in the sixth as pinch-runner Allison Thomas scored from third on bunt attempt by Paige Souza after the catcher dropped the ball attempting to tag Thomas at the plate.

Salem State takes on Westfield State in a MASCAC doubleheader this Sunday at 1:00 pm.
