Vikings Sweep Bears

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State took a pair of games from Biridgewater State in MASCAC action on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings received strong pitching performances from Gracie Martineau and Alanis Toledano, who led the Vikings to 10-2 and 4-0 wins over the Bears. Salem State is now 10-8 and 3-1 in conference while Bridgewater State goes to 8-10 and 1-3.

Game 1

How It Happened

Martineau allowed only two runs - one earned on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk as the Vikings defeated the Bears 10-2 in five innings. Alaina GiulianoSamantha Gaona-Sullivan and Tara Perryman all went 2-for-3 and combined for four runs and five RBI.  

McKayla Cusack started for Bridgewater State and went 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

  • Sydney Schaefer scored for the Bears in the top of the first on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • The Vikings answered with three in the bottom of the first as a Gaona-Sullivan single and Perryman double plated two of the runs.
  • The Viking scored three times in the second to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Dawn Eisnor and Allison Frost hit RBI singles before an error by the Bears brought home the third run of the inning, scoring Emily Henning.
  • Taylor McDermott and Toledano extended the lead to 8-2 with RBI singles in the fourth.
  • Giuliano made it an 9-2 game with an RBI double in the fifth before Gaona-Sullivan ended the game with a base hit that scored Giuliano with Salem State's 10th run.  

Game 2

How It Happened

Toledano fired a one-hitter in game two, giving up just one hit over seven innings with seven strikeouts and five walks while adding a solo home run at the plate in the fourth inning. Frost was 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and Perryman added two hits, including a double with a run scored. 

Janet Jolly broke up the no-hitter for Bridgewater State with a ground-rule double to center in the sixth. Olivia Hargreaves started for the Bears and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

  • A fielder's choice brought home Frost with the game's first run in the bottom of the first.
  • Eisnor made it 2-0 with a groundout to short in the second.
  • McDermott's RBI double made it 3-0 in the fourth before Toledano added an insurace run in the sixth with her second home run of the year.

Salem State goes to St. Joseph's of Maine tomorrow for a doubleehader beginning at 4:00 pm.
