THE LEAD – The No. 4 seeded Salem State men's tennis team saw its postseason come to an end in a hard-fought 4-3 loss against the No. 5 seeded WestConn by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- WestConn took the doubles point despite Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.) taking the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-1.
- In singles, the Vikings evened things at one thanks to a win at No.2 singles from Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) by a score of 6-1, 6-2. After the Wolves took the next singles matchup, both sides continued to trade points back and forth with the Vikes earning singles wins from Michael Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) at No. 5 singles (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and Wood at No. 3 (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
- However, in the final matchup at No. 6 singles, Michael Makiej (Andover, Mass.) fell in a tough match by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 5-7, allowing the Wolves to come away with the 4-3 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Ronan ended the year winning two of his last three singles contests.
- Muttiah snapped a six-match singles losing streak with his win on Tuesday.
- The pairing of Wood and Wilkins ended the season by winning three of their last four doubles contests.
- Salem and WestConn have now met four times in the postseason, with the Wolves leading the overall series, 4-0.
