Providence, R.I.-- Salem State picked up their second victory of the year and their first Little East Conference win as the Vikings defeated Rhode Island College 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. Salem State is now 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.
The Vikings opened the day by taking two of the three doubles points from the Anchormen (1-4, 0-1 LEC). Matt Mogren (Newburyport, MA) and John Didonato (Newbury, MA), won at first doubles, 8-3 over Tim Holzinger (Foster, RI) and sophomore Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, RI).
Salem State took the edge going into singles play with junior Kevin Lam (Salem, MA) and sophomore Luke Hodgkins (Winthrop, MA) topping sophomore Chris Klawitter (Brooklyn, CT) and senior Brian Gil (North Providence, RI), 8-3, at third doubles.
Mogren topped Holzinger (6-3, 6-4) at No. 1 singles and Didonato bested Taggart (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) at the No. 2 flight. No. 4 singles saw Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) top Dluznieski (6-3, 6-4) with Klawitter beating junior Rob Nadal (7-5, 6-4). Gil topped sophomore Drew Nekoroski (Beverly, MA) (6-2, 6-4) at No. 6 singles, while the Vikings' Erickson topped Pimentel (6-4, 6-3) in the decisive match at the No. 3 flight.
