THE LEAD— Despite tying the game in the second half, the Salem State University men's soccer team fell to Dean College, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Longley Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For most of the first half, both sides played each other hard as neither side could find the back of the net. However, Salem had numerous chances as the Vikings outshot the Bulldogs, 10-2, in the first. One of the squad's best looks came at 17:41 when Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) sent a shot on net, but the Dean defense blocked it.
- As the first came to a close, the hosts were able to break the scoreless draw at 44:52 when Chris Tunley beat Brady Whitmarsh (Attleboro, Mass.) which allowed Dean to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- In the second, Salem continued to apply pressure on the offensive side. Eventually, it paid off as Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) found the back of the net after a nice look from Liam Hyatt (Endwell, N.Y.) at 67:28. However, just 22 seconds later (67:50), the Bulldogs retook the lead thanks to a Raul Maldonado score.
- From then on, the Vikings peppered Dean goalie Charlie Hall with six shots on net, but unfortunately were turned away each time as the hosts came away with a 2-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fevry's score was his first of the 2025 campaign.
- Whitmarsh ended the day with two saves in 90 minutes of action.
- Dean had a three-goalie rotation of Hall, Andrew Wheelan, and Colin Edwards, who combined for 14 stops. Hall made half of Dean's saves with seven.
- Salem outshot Dean by a 25-6 margin.
- The Vikings also held the advantage in corner kicks, 2-0.
- Wednesday's matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
