Driscoll Steps Down as Salem State Men's Lacrosse Head Coach
SALEM, Mass. - Salem State men's lacrosse Head Coach Stephen Driscoll will be stepping away from his role after leading the Vikings for five seasons.
"Coach Driscoll was among my first hires when I was named Director of Athletics," said Athletic Director Nicolle Wood. I am so grateful for how he invested in this program from day one. He has helped to increase roster size, improve competitiveness, and elevate the program in every way. Most importantly, Coach Driscoll has been an amazing role model for our men's lacrosse team and has built a culture that will continue to benefit all Viking student-athletes in the future."
Driscoll compiled 27 wins while earning four victories in the Little East Conference (LEC) in his tenure with the Vikings. In his last two seasons, he posted back-to-back eight-win seasons, which were the most regular-season wins since 2013. His 27 wins are also the second most in program history, behind Trevor Eaton (56).
His strongest season came this past year when he was named the LEC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Driscoll guided the Vikes to an 8-7 record while going 3-4 in LEC play. The eight wins were the second most in program history, and it was the third time he finished with five or more wins in his career. Driscoll and his staff had the Vikings ranked within the top-five in goals per game (13.47-third), goals (202-fourth), assists (118-fourth), and assists per game (7.87-third).
Individually, the Vikings collected five LEC All-Conference honors, one Rookie of the Year, and one New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-Star game participant. In the classroom, Driscoll's student-athletes earned four NEILA All-Academic Team selections, 24 LEC Academic Honor Roll recipients, and 19 LEC Spring All-Academic Team honorees.
"I am incredibly grateful for my time at Salem State University and the opportunity to work with so many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and supporters of the program," said Driscoll. "The relationships built over the years and the memories we created together will always hold a special place in my life.
From the beginning, our goal was simple: to leave the program better than we found it. Together, we increased our win totals, set and broke numerous program records on both sides of the field, earned multiple Little East Conference weekly and postseason honors, and expanded our roster to build a stronger foundation for the future. We worked hard to create meaningful experiences beyond lacrosse through community service and mental health awareness events, helping our student-athletes grow as leaders and community members.
Most importantly, I want to thank the players. Your commitment, work ethic, resilience, and willingness to buy into our vision are what made every accomplishment possible. You embraced challenges, represented Salem State with pride, and worked every day to elevate the program. It was an honor to coach you, and I am grateful for the trust you placed in me. The relationships built with you will always be what I value most from my time at Salem State.
I am especially thankful for our assistant coaches, Kevin Ranta, Alfonse Femino, Jake Athanas, and Paul DiFluri, for their support, guidance, and belief in our vision for the program.
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Athletic Director Nicolle Wood, Assistant Athletic Director Chris Harvey, former Head Athletic Trainer Scott Braid, Assistant AD for Sports Medicine Ariana Moran, Kate Quigley, Jacob Hyjek, Becca Ramirez-McKinley, and Luz Quirk. Thank you to all the head and assistant coaches at Salem for your support and friendship along the way. Your support, professionalism, and willingness to help our program succeed never went unnoticed, and I am grateful for the relationships we built along the way.
I am proud of what we accomplished together and confident that Salem State Men's Lacrosse is positioned for continued success. Thank you to everyone who played a role in this journey; you are all in my heart."
