Salem State Tops MCLA 4-0

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State scored four times in the final period to break open a scoreless game and win 4-0 in their Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener while picking up their first win of the season on Saturday at Rockett Arena. The Vikings improve to 1-2, 1-0 while the Trailblazers remain winless at 0-3, 0-1. 

How it Happened:

  • Both goalies pitched shutouts over the first two periods with Salem State's Will Nepveu making 29 saves compared to his counterpart Mathew Gover's 25 stops. 
  • Carson James broke the deadlock, early in the third, as he slipped a shot just inside the post for a 1-0 lead on an assist from Shane Taddia
  • Carson Whitman extended the lead to 2-0 at 7:10 of the third as he beat Gover from the slot on assists from Nick Sweet and Aren Francis .
  • Salem State's Sean McWhinnie knocked in an empty-netter to ice the game before Luke Day closed the scoring late with a power play goal for the Vikings to make the final 4-0.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Nepveu finished with 39 saves for Salem State.
  • Gover was credited with 38 stops.
  • The Vikings edged the Trailblazers in shots 42-39.
  • Salem State was just 1-for-5 (.200) on the power play.
