THE LEAD— The No. 5 seed Salem State field hockey team saw its season come to an end when the squad fell 3-1 to No. 4 seed Worcester State University Tuesday evening at John Coughlin Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, the Worcester offense tested goalie Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) early on in the frame. The Lancers sent seven shots on net in the first, including a point where they fired back-to-back shots at 8:36 and 8:40, but Mosley turned away each shot and helped keep things in striking distance for Salem as the first ended scoreless.
- However, in the early in the second (17:03), Worcester got on the board first thanks to a Kylie Casey goal. After Charlotte MacGregor put a shot on net, Casey was in the right place at the right time and corralled the loose ball and snuck it past Mosley.
- Worcester kept up the offensive pressure and tacked on a second goal at 25:18 off the stick of MacGregor. Despite the two-goal lead, Salem cut the deficit in half just before halftime (28:26) when Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) found the back of the net on a quick transition play.
- Nearly halfway into the third (37:24), the Lancers pushed back ahead by two (3-1) when Allison Keenan put her shot past Mosley after Emily Curran slipped a pass to her off a penalty corner. For the remainder of the third and fourth quarters, the Worcester defense held firm and ultimately secured a 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Morey's score ended up being her fifth of the year, tying her career high.
- Mosley finished with 10 saves on the day. It marked her 13th game with 10-plus saves on the season.
- Worcester State held the advantage in shots, 20-3.
- The Lancers also ended with more penalty corners than the Vikings by an 11-3 margin. However, Salem did not allow a single penalty corner in the fourth.
- Salem has ended the year with at least five wins in two of the last three seasons.
