THE LEAD— The Salem State field hockey team fell 4-2 in a tough Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) battle Saturday morning at Framingham State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Less than five minutes into the first (4:28), Framingham got on the board first thanks to a Finley Hogan score. Despite not scoring in the first, Salem evened things at one nearly a minute into the second (16:07) when Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) found the back of the net. After Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) corralled a pass from Bree Henderson (Brentwood, N.H.), she put a hard pass on net where Talbot was there to deflect the ball past the Rams' goalie.
- However, the Rams pulled back ahead shortly before halftime with two quick scores from Mikayla Malmquist and Natalia Roehr at 27:32 and 29:05, respectively. From then on, Framingham took a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
- Coming out of the half, the hosts continued their momentum when Reese Perry netted the Rams' fourth goal at 32:56. Nearly two minutes later (34:30), the Vikings responded and made it 4-2 courtesy of Talbot once again after she controlled a loose ball in front of the Framingham net.
- Down 4-2 in the fourth, Salem had numerous chances to get another score. The Blue and Orange peppered Rams goalie, Angelina Barrett, with back-to-back shots at 58:21 and 58:24 off the sticks of Morey and Talbot, but were turned away each time. For the remainder of the contest, the Rams' defense held firm and earned a 4-2 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Talbot's two scores were her 10th and 11th goals of the year. She has now posted four multi-goal games this year.
