THE LEAD— Highlighted by a two-goal performance from Zoey Radford (Middleborough, Mass.), the Salem State field hockey team picked up a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win at Anna Maria College Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Throughout the first quarter, Anna Maria tested Vikings goalie Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) early with three shots on net. However, Mosley turned away each attempt and helped keep things scoreless in the first.
- Towards the end of the second, Salem finally got on the board after Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) helped set up Radford for the score. From then on, the Salem defense held firm, and the squad took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- During the third quarter, the AMCATS offense had a great chance early on in the 33rd minute when they sent three shots in a row towards Mosley. The junior goalie, though, stopped each shot attempt during the chaos in front of the net. The hosts also had two more great looks towards the end of the third in the 43rd minute, but once again, Mosley made crucial saves that allowed the Vikes to go into the final quarter with a one-goal advantage.
- In the 51st minute of the fourth quarter, Salem tacked on an insurance goal courtesy of Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) after another nice setup from Morey. With less than 20 seconds left in the contest (59:41), Radford potted her second goal of the day, and the Blue and Orange ended up with a 3-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Radford's two goals are her second multi-goal game of the season.
- Morey's two-assist game is her first multi-assist game of the season. It is also the second of her career.
- Talbot's score is her team-leading ninth on the year.
- Mosley finished the day with 10 saves in net.
- Julianna Stanger ended the contest with five stops for the hosts.
- Ari Gonzalez and Lily Celata led the AMCATS offense with five shots each.
- Despite being outshot, 16-10, Salem held the advantage in penalty corners, 15-12.
