THE LEAD—  The Salem State field hockey team continued MASCAC play on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Worcester State, but unfortunately fell 6-0 at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both sides matched each other's intensity in the first quarter, as neither was able to get a shot on net. The Vikings had two great looks toward the end of the quarter when Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.) and Emily Schneider (South Hadley, Mass.) both had shots with less than a minute in the frame, but were turned away by Lancers goalie, Lizzy McDonald.
  • Shortly after the second got underway (17:29), Worcester struck first after Kae Coleman found the back of the net after Kaylie Ciccone set her up. Less than two minutes later (19:02), Ciccone got a goal of her own thanks to a Coleman assist. The Lancers' offense kept churning in the second as the visitors tacked on a third goal off the stick of Allison Keenan and ultimately took a 3-0 lead into the half.
  • Worcester carried its momentum from the second early into the third as Keenan scored again and made it 4-0 Lancers. Around 10 minutes later (41:25), Worcester added a fifth goal courtesy of Ciccone once again.
  • In the final quarter, the visitors added another insurance goal (47:50) when Charlotte MacGregor potted the team's sixth goal after Ciccone dished out another assist. From then on, Salem had multiple good looks to get on the board as the Vikes peppered McDonald with three shots on net but were turned away each time.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) finished the day with a season-high 19 saves.
  • Siobhan Smith (Peabody, Mass.) and Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) paced the Vikings' offense with five shots.
  • Keenan and Ciccone led the Worcester offense with two goals apiece.
  • Despite Worcester having the advantage in penalty corners (14-6), Salem ended the fourth quarter with four corners compared to Worcester's two.
  • Tuesday's loss marked the squad's first home defeat of the season. Previously, Salem was 3-0 at home, which was the Vikings' best home start since 2008 (3-0).
