THE LEAD—  In a hard-fought matchup between two MASCAC foes, the Salem State field hockey team fell to Fitchburg State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first quarter, Salem had a great look as the squad sent back-to-back shots on Isabella Corcoran from Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) and Emily Schneider (South Hadley, Mass.). Unfortunately, Corcoran turned away the Vikings shot attempts and kept it 0-0.
  • Later in the first, the Falcons broke the scoreless tie courtesy of Samantha Jones after she beat Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) on the left side for the 1-0 lead.
  • In the second, the Vikings held the Falcons offense to zero shots while the squad got off three of their own, including a good look from Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) early in the quarter (16:29), but could not find the back of the net. Despite those three looks, the Falcons' defense held firm and took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
  • Fitchburg's defense kept the Vikings in check, as the hosts allowed only two shots between the third and fourth quarters, and Salem could never get their shots past Corcoran. The Blue and Orange had a great look in the fourth at 46:39 when Sarah Gionfriddo (Pepperhill, Mass.) got a shot on net but was blocked by the Fitchburg defense. Ultimately, the Falcons went on to secure a 1-0 win.
