THE LEAD—  Thanks to Grace Morey's (Danver, Mass.) hat-trick, the Salem State University field hockey team picked up its first MASCAC win by doubling up Anna Maria, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than two minutes in the contest (1:32), the Vikings struck first off the stick of Siobhan Smith (Peabody, Mass.), thanks to a great look from Hannah Cochran (Middleborough, Mass.). However, less than a minute later, Anna Maria responded with a goal of its own courtesy of Morgan Beane. The fast-scoring first quarter continued when, at 3:42, the Vikings recaptured the lead thanks to a Morey goal, which put the squad up 2-1.
  • In the second, both sides played each other hard defensively and early in the frame, the AMCATS had great back-to-back chances with a scrum in front of the net as Lily Celata and Alyse Mutti were able to get shots off but were turned away each time by Salem State goalie, Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.)
  • Towards the end of the quarter (26:31), the Vikings would go up 3-1 after Morey's second goal on the afternoon and the squad took a 3-1 lead headed into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, the Blue and Orange scored quickly as Morey completed her hat trick at 38:51 and nearly two minutes later, Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) found the back of the net as well, which put the squad up 5-1.
  • After Salem's defense held strong for the rest of the third, the Vikings tacked on another insurance goal in the fourth courtesy of Talboy at 47:13 which made it 6-1. However, Anna Maria would not go quietly as the visitors scored two late goals thanks to Jade Brousseau (53:14) and Mutti (58:01) to cut the Vikings lead in half (6-3). Despite the late surge by the AMCATS, Mosley and the Salem State defense held firm and secured the 6-3 victory.
