Owls Defeat Vikings in Shootout

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State field hockey hosted Westfield State University at Alumni Field tonight, where the Owls secured the 3-2 victory over the Vikings in a shootout. Tonight's loss drops Salem's record to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

How it Happened:

  • Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) made three saves before the Owls scored two minutes into the second period, putting Westfield ahead 1-0.

  • The Vikings attempted to equalize before halftime, but the Owls' goalie denied their only shot on target, leaving the score at 1-0 in favor of the Owls at the break.

  • Westfield scored their second goal just two minutes into the third quarter, but the Vikings responded swiftly when Lexi Ford (Methuen, Mass.) converted a penalty corner, making it a 2-1 game with 12 minutes remaining in the frame.

  • With just over a minute left in regulation, Allison Thomas's (Carver, Mass.) aggressive play in front of the net secured the equalizer for the Vikings, sending the game into overtime, where the two-goal stalemate remained through double overtime, leading to a shootout.

  • Erin Lane (Canton, Mass.) netted the lone goal in the shootout to secure the win for the Owls.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Lexi Ford recroded her first collegiate goal in tonight's effort while Allison Thomas has scored in back-to-back games for the Vikings.

  • Izzy Mosley recorded a season-high in saves tonight with 27, which ties her career-high that was set during her collegiate debut.
