Vikings Notch First Win of Season with 4-1 Victory Over Amcats

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State field hockey took to Alumni Field tonight, where they notched their first win of the season after a pair of goals from freshman Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) spearheaded the Vikings to the 4-1 victory over the Amcats of Anna Maria College.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a quiet opening stanza, Salem dominated the second as Siobhan Smith (Peabody, Mass.) and Aleena Frith (Pepperell, Mass.) found Talbot for goals less than a minute apart to give the Vikings a 2-0 edge with nine minutes to play in the half.
  • Salem remained on the offensive for the remainder of the second quarter, forcing seven penalty corners while rattling off six shots however Anna Maria's goalie, Julianna Stanger (New Braintree, Mass.), would turn away five shots on goal to keep her squad's deficit at two to head into the break.
  • Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) got in on the fun in the third after a breakaway goal would make it a 3-0 game to head into the final 15 minutes of action.
  • Allison Thomas (Carver, Mass.) added to Salem's tally minutes into the fourth before Megan Tegethoff (Sioux Falls, S.D.) gave the Amcats their first goal of the game, but it would be too little too late as the Vikings would go on to take the 4-1 victory.
