THE LEAD – The Salem State baseball team completed its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) three-game sweep of Framingham State after taking down the Rams in a Saturday doubleheader, 4-1 and 16-3 Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- Throughout the first two innings, it was a pitcher's duel between the two squads' starters, as neither allowed a single hit. However, in the top half of the third, Salem broke the scoreless tie when Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) hit a fly ball to right that, despite being caught for an out, the outfielder overthrew the ball past third base, which allowed Jonny Payne (Seekonk, Mass.) to score after he had singled earlier.
- Later in the fifth, the Vikings struck again when Gonzalez ripped a single up the middle that allowed Payne to score and made it a 2-0 ballgame. Gonzalez struck again in the seventh when he belted a two-run homer to left and put the Blue and Orange up 4-0.
- Salem starter Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.) was dealing all day as the junior did not allow a run until the seventh when the Rams took advantage of a Salem error. Despite the one run, Currier was not phased and retired the next batter via a strikeout and secured the 4-1 victory in game one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Gonzalez led the Salem offense with three RBIs. He has now posted eight games with multiple RBIs, and in those contests, Salem is 7-1.
- Currier tossed his third complete game of the season and allowed just two hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out eight.
- Christian Cox and Zachary Kern were the lone Framingham State batters to record a hit in game one.
- Connor Thibault earned the loss after going 6.0 IP while allowing two hits, two runs (zero earned), and striking out two.
- Salem's defense has now allowed five or fewer hits in nine contests this year.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- In the top half of the first inning, Salem struck first with a three-run frame highlighted by an RBI double from Gonzalez that made it 1-0 at the time. Salem continued its momentum into the second and third innings when the squad scored a combined six more runs to go up 9-0 after three. Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.) highlighted the high-scoring innings with a two-run shot to straightaway center in the second that made it 5-0.
- Salem grabbed its first double-digit lead (10-0) in the fifth when Ethan Stepputtis (Prospect, Conn.) stole third and took advantage of a wild throw from the Rams catcher. However, in the bottom half of the frame, Framingham trimmed the deficit to eight (10-2) thanks a Salem error that allowed two runners to cross the plate.
- The Vikings responded in the top of the sixth when the squad plated four more runs to go up 14-2. Gonzalez launched his second overall homer of the day with a shot to left that brought in two, which had made it 13-2.
- After Framingham grabbed another run in the bottom of the sixth, Salem ended up tacking on two more runs in the seventh, thanks to an Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) RBI double and the squad would ultimately take game two, 16-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)
- Gonzalez once again led the Salem offense with four RBIs. Meanwhile, the squad also saw four other batters record multiple RBIs, including Duggan, who had three, and Belgrove, Ryan Bourgeois (Nashua, N.H.), and Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.), who all had two apiece.
- Duggan's two RBI allowed him to surpass the 100 RBI career mark (101). He becomes just the ninth Viking in program history to reach the 100-RBI mark.
- Bourgeois' home run was his second of the season and third of his career. Meanwhile, Belgrove's was his first of the season and second of his career.
- Collin Tenney (Woodbridge, Conn.) earned the win by tossing the second complete game of his career. The first-year starter only allowed three hits, three runs (one earned) while tying his career-high in strikeouts with nine.
- Cox and Nathan Kutcher were the lone Framingham hitters to record an RBI in game two.
- Shaun Marsh ended up with the loss after going 2.0 IP and allowing nine hits, nine runs (seven earned), and striking out one.
- Salem's win in game two was the first MASCAC three-game sweep of the season.
- The Vikings have now swept the Rams in the last two three-game sets.
