THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team kicked off a three-game Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) three-game set against Framingham State with a 6-2 MASCAC victory Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Salem got on the board thanks to Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.), who ripped a triple down the left field line that allowed Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) to score after he doubled earlier.
- In the following inning, the Vikes tacked on two more runs, highlighted by RBI doubles off the bats of Ethan Stepputtis (Prospect, Conn.) and Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.). The squad added another when Currier crossed the plate after the pitcher committed three balks.
- Framingham had a chance in the top half of the inning to get on the board after having runners on first and second with one out. However, Salem starter Matt Walling (Cheshire, Conn.) retired the next two batters. From then on, Walling had a stretch where he retired seven straight.
- Both sides continued to exchange scoreless innings from the fifth through the seventh before the Blue and Orange tacked on another run courtesy of a Stepputtis RBI that made it 6-0. The Rams would not go quietly as the visitors trimmed the deficit to four (6-2) with a two-run ninth. Jakob Lindkvist highlighted the frame with a solo shot to deep left. After the Rams homer, Walling settled down and struck out the next batter and secured the 6-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Stepputtis led the Vikings offense with two RBIs while going 2-2 at the plate.
- Walling earned the win after tossing the first complete game of his career. In the outing, Walling allowed just five hits, two runs, and fanned three.
- Lindvksit and Rosco Palmer were the lone Framingham State hitters to record an RBI on Friday.
- Charlie Ambroult took the loss after going 5.2 IP while allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned), and striking out one.
- Salem held the advantage in hits, 10-5.
- The Vikings have now won the last five matchups against the Rams.
