THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team dropped its non-conference finale to Suffolk University, 13-4, on Thursday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first inning, it was all Salem as the squad plated four runs to get ahead of the hosts. Chris Welch (Monroe, Conn.) highlighted the early offense for Salem with a two-run RBI double that found a gap in right field.
- Later in the bottom half of the second, Suffolk responded with a four-run inning of its own to even the contest at four. Jack Mihalchik ended up driving in the tying run thanks to a sacrifice fly to right.
- During the top of the third, the Vikings had a great look to regain the lead when Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) loaded the bases with two outs. However, Suffolk starter Jonathan Marcotte escaped the jam by retiring the next batter via groundout.
- Suffolk's offense continued its momentum when the hosts tallied a combined eight runs between the third through fifth innings to go up 12-4. The Rams' strongest inning came in the fourth after scoring four times, which featured a two-run RBI double from Vasili Scangas that made it 10-4 at the time.
- Throughout the rest of the way, the Blue and Orange had opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings after having runners on first, but unfortunately could not generate more offense. The Rams ended up tacking on another run in the eighth before ultimately securing a 13-4 win in the ninth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Welch led the Vikings offense with a career-high two.
- Salem's starter, Peter Moor (Taunton, Mass.), ended up with the loss after going 3.0 IP while allowing one hit, five runs, and striking out one.
- Scangas guided the Rams offense with three RBIs on the day.
- Ben Cassavoy earned the win after coming in for relief and tossed 6.0 IP and allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out six.
- Salem and Suffolk have now met 57 times, with the Vikings leading the overall series, 32-25.
