THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team kicked off a three-game set with the Anna Maria College AMCATS on Friday but unfortunately came up on the losing side by falling, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anna Maria got on the board first in the bottom half of the second when Justin Chiulli ripped a single up the middle and gave the AMCATS a 1-0 lead. However, two innings later in the top of the fourth, Salem answered back and tied the contest at one courtesy of a Ryan Bourgeois (Nashua, N.H.) that found a gap past the Anna Maria shortstop.
- Thanks to strong pitching from starter Matt Walling (Plantsville, Conn.), by retiring the side in the fourth and fifth, Salem had a chance to pull ahead in the sixth when Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) loaded the bases with a single which put Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.) at second and Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) at third with one out. Unfortunately, AMCATS pitcher Sean O'Hara got the next two Vikings batters out to keep it a 1-1 game.
- Both sides continued to keep the other off the board for the next three innings. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Anna Maria ended up walking off Salem thanks to a Brayden Wright RBI single up the middle for the 2-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bourgeois recorded the lone RBI for Salem on Friday.
- Four different Vikings finished with at least two hits on the day (Duggan, Belgrove, Lynch, and Bourgeois).
- Walling ended up with the tough loss after going 8.0 IP while giving up five hits, two runs, and striking out one.
- Chiulli and Wright were the only two AMCATS to finish with an RBI.
- Owen Sullivan ended up with the win in a bullpen game for Anna Maria after going 1.0 IP while allowing zero hits and runs.
- Salem ended up outhitting Anna Maria, 9-6.
- Friday's matchup marked the first meeting between the two programs since 2020.
