THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team wrapped its three-game series with Bridgewater State by dropping the finale, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Central Campus Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bridgewater struck first in the opening frame after the visitors plated two runs. DJ Prampin highlighted the scoring with an RBI single that made it 2-0 at the time. Later in the second, the Bears tacked on another run for a 3-0 lead thanks to a Cam Beltramini RBI single.
- Salem threatened in the bottom half of the third when Ryan Bourgeois (Nashua, N.H.) led off the inning with a walk and then later, Ethan Strapputtis (Prospect, Conn.) drew his own walk to have runners on first and second with one out. However, Bridgewater starter Danny Jasmin escaped the jam by retiring the next two batters.
- After Bridgewater tacked on another run in the fifth, the Vikings had another chance to cut into the deficit when Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.) and Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) both reached base with one out. Unfortunately, just like the third inning, Bridgewater pitcher Matt Kustigian escaped the threat by retiring the next two hitters.
- The Bears added another run in the ninth and pushed their lead up to five (5-0), but the Vikes would not go quietly. Michael Buccaro (Stratford, Conn.) drove in two runs courtesy of a two-run RBI single that found a gap up the middle and made it a 5-2 ballgame. Despite the late rally, the Bears struck out the net hitter and secured the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Buccaro's two-RBI day tied his season high.
- Matt Walling (Plantsville, Conn.) took the loss after going 1.0 IP while allowing one hit and two runs (zero earned), while striking out two.
- Koi Samples (Avon, Conn.) made his pitching debut for Salem and tossed 2.0 IP while giving up one hit, one run, and struck out two.
- Beltramini led the Bears with two RBIs on Tuesday.
- Jasmin earned the win for Bridgewater after going 5.0 IP and giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out four.
- Bridgewater is currently riding a 12-game win streak. However, Salem limited the Bears to their lowest run total (five runs) during the stretch.
