THE LEAD – The Salem State baseball team dropped a Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader at Bridgewater State by losing in the first game, 8-6, and then in the second, 10-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • Bridgewater ended up striking first in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI by Nick Berube, while Joshua Selander also scored when taking advantage of a throw from the outfield.
  • Later in the fourth, Salem responded and evened the contest at two courtesy of a two-run RBI double off the bat of Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) that was ripped down the left field line. After the Bears retook the lead in the fourth, the Vikings responded yet again thanks to a Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) RBI to tie the game at three.
  • Both sides continued to match the other's scoring for the next two innings. When the Bears pulled ahead by two (6-4) after the sixth, the Blue and Orange once again would not go quietly as the squad evened the contest at six in the seventh thanks to RBIs from Jack Doyle (Salem, Mass.) and Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.)
  • Despite Salem tying the game in the final inning, the hosts ended up walking off the Vikings behind a game-winning two-run shot from DJ Prampin for the 8-6 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Lynch led the Salem offense with two RBIs in the opening contest.
  • Along with Lynch, three other Vikings knocked in an RBI, including Gonzalez, Doyle, Currier, and Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.).
  • Nick Krompegal (Bristol, Conn.) earned a no-decision in the start for Salem after going 4.1 IP while allowing four hits, five runs, and striking out four. Meanwhile, Brandon McMahon (Malden, Mass.) ended up with the tough loss after tossing 1.2 IP while allowing four hits, three runs (two earned), and striking out two.
  • Brampin and Berube both led the Bears' offense with RBIs each.
  • Trey Yesu finished with a no-decision in the opening contest after going 5.2 IP and allowing eight hits, four runs, and striking out one. Matt Kustigian earned the win for the hosts by going 1.1 IP while allowing three hits and two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • In game two, it was all Bridgewater State as the Bears scored five runs in the first three innings. Benjamin Sepeck highlighted the early offense with a two-run RBI double that had made it 4-0 at the time.
  • Salem had a chance to get on the board in the fifth when Ethan Stepputtis (Prospect, Conn.) singled to a gap in right field but Bears pitcher CJ Hess retired the next two hitters and kept the lead at five.
  • In the bottom half of the fifth, Bridgewater tacked on five more runs, which included RBI triples from Jamie Luna and Ryan Secovich. The Vikings made a late push in the sixth after Ryan Bourgeois (Nashua, N.H.) drew a walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, Hess escaped the jam and secured the 10-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Stepputtis and Lynch were the only two Vikings to record a hit in the second game.
  • Alex Metznik (Westford, Mass.) ended up with the loss after going 2.0 innings while allowing three hits, four runs, and striking out one.
  • Luna and Sepeck guided the Bridgewater offense with two RBIs apiece.
  • Chase Beach earned the win after tossing four innings and allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out three.
